Nizza is a wine region that was upgraded to the highest quality category in Italy (DOCG) in 2014. Previously, the wines from this region were sold under the name Barbera d´Asti Superiore Nizza. Nizza is a classification dedicated to the Barbera variety with the aim of raising the quality of the variety and competing with the best Barolo and Barbaresco. The Nizza DOCG comprises 18 villages around Nizza Monferrato in the province of Asti. The total area under cultivation is about 250 hectares and only the best Barbera vineyards in the region are sold under this name. Gianni Bertolino, the head of the Nizza DOCG wine region, is heavily involved in the development of this´super-Barbera´. This splendid red Barbera wine is produced in the garden of Olim Bauda, located right next to the winery on the north side of the village of Nizza Monferrato. The wine is strong, full, dark cherry and long. It´s a great wine for a game or a truffle risotto. For lovers of strong red wines, and wine is also suitable for long-term cellaring. The wine was aged for over 30 months in large oak barrels of 2,500 litres.
